Statement: Hong Kong Watch strongly condemn police brutality

The Hong Kong Police Force's brutality last night was wholly disproportionate, and a breach of international human rights standards which deserves utter condemnation.

Examples of excessive use of force by the police included a women being blinded by a bean bag bullet being shot into her eyes at close range, the police force dressing up as protesters in order to beat up and arrest protesters, and tear gas being illegally fired inside MTR stations.

Boris Johnson has said he stands with Hong Kong's people 'every inch of the way'. Now is the time to prove it and take action. The UK Government must ensure that no more rioting equipment is sold to the Hong Kong Government, and that proper human rights safeguards are enshrined into any future UK-Hong Kong free trade agreement.
