We are honoured to announce that Lord Patten of Barnes has joined Hong Kong Watch as a patron.

Lord Patten of Barnes served as the 28th and last Governor of Hong Kong from 1992 to 1997 and Chairman of the Conservative Party from 1990 to 1992. He was European Commissioner for External Relations from 2000-2004, made a life peer in 2005 and has been Chancellor of the University of Oxford since 2003.

Patten shared the following message: “I am privileged to be a patron of Hong Kong Watch. Not a huge organisation, but it is an organisation which is terribly important and has had a very big impact. It was set up because of worries, right around the world, about how the Chinese Communist regime in Beijing is trying to squeeze the life out of a great Asian city.“

He continued: ”Hong Kong Watch has ensured that the cause of freedom in Hong Kong has more and more adherents around the world. It does not just collect followers in Britain, but right around the world.”

Benedict Rogers, the Chair of Trustees at Hong Kong Watch said: "We are absolutely delighted that Lord Patten of Barnes has agreed to join Hong Kong Watch as a Patron. As the Last Governor of Hong Kong, he is much loved by Hongkongers and deeply respected around the world for his defence of Hong Kong's freedoms, the rule of law and autonomy, and his efforts to urge Britain and the international community to live up to the promises made to Hong Kong. With his extremely distinguished political career he brings a wealth of experience and wisdom. Having worked so closely together over the past three years it is a great privilege that he has accepted a formal role with Hong Kong Watch, and we look forward to continuing to work together for the people of Hong Kong."

Hong Kong Watch is an international organisation with a global presence. The UK patrons of Hong Kong Watch include the former UK Foreign Secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind; Labour Shadow Foreign Minister, Catherine West MP; Liberal Democrat Foreign Policy Spokesperson, Alistair Carmichael MP; Conservative Party Human Rights Commission Chair, Fiona Bruce MP; Crossbench peer, Lord Alton of Liverpool; and Sir Geoffrey Nice QC, lead prosecutor in the trial of Slobodan Milosevic.

International patrons of Hong Kong Watch include the former Canadian Secretary of State for Asia Pacific David Kilgour, Canadian Shadow Minister Garnett Genuis, and the former South Korean Ambassador for Human Rights Jung-hoon Lee.
