BBC World News: Hong Kong journalists arrested. Police raided headquarter of Apple Daily newspaper

On 17 June 2021, hundreds of police officers in Hong Kong have raided the offices of the pro-democracy newspaper, Apple Daily. The editor-in-chief and four executives were arrested, accused of breaking China’s National Security Law.

Speaking to BBC World News about press freedom in Hong Kong, Benedict Rogers, Chief Executive of Hong Kong Watch said:

"Press freedom is under ever-increasing pressure. The terms of the National Security Law are so vaguely defined and widely applied, so conspiring with foreigners might include talking with someone like me. Unless the law can be better defined and applied, journalists will be under increasing danger.”
