Joey Siu speaks at the Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy

On 6 April 2022, Joey Siu, Hong Kong Watch’s Policy Advisor, was invited to be one of the speakers at the Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy, held in Geneva, Switzerland. Joey spoke about the human rights issues in Hong Kong at the summit. Rushan Abbas, Founder of Campaign for Uyghurs, Melissa Mahtani, CNN journalist, Zarifa Ghafari, Afghanistan's youngest Mayor in history and many outstanding human rights activists gave their remarks at the summit as well.

Joey talked about the police brutality in Hong Kong in the past few years. She also cited the 47 pro-democracy primary election case as an example to show how almost all pro-democracy activists have become political prisoners. She also mentioned how the Chinese Communist Party has used the national security law to dismantle Hong Kong's civil society and destroy the human rights and freedoms that Hong Kong people are entitled to. Joey said that the international community must respond to the crisis in Hong Kong, and democratic countries need to make concrete policy changes in response to Hong Kong’s crisis.
