Hong Kong Watch Canada holds first training workshop of Youth Initiative Programme at HongKonger Community Centre Toronto

Hong Kong Watch Canada held the first training workshop of the Youth Initiative Programme 2024 at the HongKonger Community Centre Toronto on Saturday 30 March. Around 100 people attended the session.

Jean Yip MP gave an introduction to the role of Members of Parliament and the federal Liberal Party of Canada. During the Q&A session, she answered questions about the delay in processing permanent residency applications under the Hong Kong Pathway. She encouraged applicants to contact their local MPs to raise the issue, and said that she will help advocate for the extension of the Open Work Permit as the permits of a number of applicants are due to expire this summer.

Connie Pun, an intern at Hong Kong Watch Canada and in the Canadian Parliament, explained the three levels of government in Canada: federal, provincial and municipal. Connie is currently interning with Senator Don Plett, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate.

The Youth Initiative Programme is aimed at supporting the integration of young Hong Kongers into Canadian society through civic and political engagement. Its 2024 term runs from March to June and the Canadian Parliamentary Internship Scheme will run from September 2024 to June 2025.
