40 Hong Kong organisations demand action against Canadian MP Paul Chiang from Prime Minister Mark Carney

Today, 40 Hong Kong diaspora organisations based in Canada, the US, the UK, Australia, and Germany issued a strong rebuke of Paul Chiang, Member of Parliament for Markham-Unionville and Liberal candidate in the upcoming Canadian federal election, for his endorsement of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) transnational repression tactics. They have urged Prime Minister Mark Carney to respond without delay and to reaffirm his commitment to human rights, particularly in safeguarding the well-being of Hong Kong residents in Canada.

In a joint statement, these organisations expressed their unwavering solidarity and commitment to defending freedom and human rights, categorically denouncing all forms of transnational repression. They voiced concern over recent remarks made by Paul Chiang MP, who suggested that Joe Tay – a Canadian citizen and prominent pro-democracy broadcaster for “Hong Kong Station” – should be handed over to the Chinese Consulate in Toronto in return for a HK$1 million reward issued by the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF). Such comments not only reflect Chiang’s support for the CCP’s transnational repression of Hong Kong activists but also undermine the democratic values that Canada upholds.
