Hong Kong Watch joins 24 signatories in urging UK government to maintain safe humanitarian pathways for Hong Kongers

For World Refugee Day on 20 June, Hong Kong Watch joined 18 Hong Kong community and human rights groups and 6 individual signatories in writing to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood MP, the Minister of State for Border Security and Asylum Alex Norris MP, and the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Migration and Citizenship Mike Tapp MP, to urge the UK government to maintain safe humanitarian pathways for Hong Kongers facing political persecution and seeking refuge in the UK.

The letter highlighted the obstacles faced by Hong Kongers fleeing political persecution when accessing asylum and humanitarian protections in the UK, including criminality and suitability checks that may not accurately take into account the political nature of Hong Kong’s judiciary processes.

Signatories urged the UK government to maintain safe humanitarian routes to the UK for Hong Kongers and ensure that cases of Hong Kongers with politically motivated prosecutions and convictions are appropriately reviewed in their political, legal and human rights contexts.
