Hong Kongers rally in Ottawa to urge Canadian government to resolve Hong Kong Pathway backlog
On October 2, the Hong Kong Pathway Alliance organised a rally on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, drawing nearly 40 attendees from both Toronto and Vancouver. This event was aimed at urging the Canadian government to address and resolve the backlog in the Hong Kong Pathway immigration process.
The rally was supported by Hong Kong Watch, which facilitated the presence of several parliamentarians who came to receive the Alliance’s petition during the event. Notable attendees included Jean Yip MP, Salma Zahid MP, Brad Redekopp MP and Chak Au MP, who expressed their solidarity with the Hong Kong community.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all parliamentarians who have shown their support for Hong Kongers. They have committed to advocating for the government to increase the quotas allocated to the Hong Kong Pathway and expedite the clearing of the backlog.
In addition, Hong Kong Watch has proactively reached out to the Minister of Immigration to discuss the pressing issues surrounding this situation. A Commissioner attended the rally outside the IRCC headquarters in Ottawa to formally receive the petition on behalf of the Minister.
The petition calls for the Minister to utilise the remaining admission targets for this year to effectively clear the backlog. It also requests additional quotas from the economic category and urges prioritising the Hong Kong Pathway. The urgency of this request is underscored by the fact that without permanent residency status, Hong Kongers are unable to transfer their Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) to Canada. This transfer is vital, as the reinvestment of these savings would not only benefit the individuals affected but also contribute positively to Canada’s economy.
Hong Kong Watch remains committed to following up with IRCC to ensure that these crucial issues are addressed and that the voices of the Hong Kong community are heard.
