Hong Kong Watch engages with the White House, Members of Congress and think tanks on Indo-Pacific strategies and China policy in Washington, DC
This month, Hong Kong Watch returned to Washington, DC and engaged with the National Security Council at the White House, key Members of Congress including Senator Bill Hagerty and Representative Rob Wittman, as well as other government departments, congressional offices, and civil society organisations. We continue to strengthen our engagement with the White House and broaden our connection with policymakers in the US.
Hong Kong Watch’s co-founder and Chair of Trustees, Aileen Calverley, together with Policy and Strategy Advisor, Ray Wong, were joined by our Canadian Patron Senator Leo Housakos, at a high-level meeting with the China Director of the National Security Council (NSC) at the White House. The discussion underscored the importance of collaboration among Western democracies on Indo-Pacific strategies and the evolving China policy in both the US and Canada. The NSC official reaffirmed that securing the release of Jimmy Lai remains a top priority for the Trump administration.
Our delegation had the privilege of meeting with Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN), member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, to discuss the role of parliamentary diplomacy in strengthening US-Canada relations and developing Indo-Pacific strategies to counter China’s aggression.
We also met with Representative Rob Wittman (R-VA), member of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, to address the escalating threats posed by Beijing in the Indo-Pacific and Arctic regions, as well as Hong Kong’s role in the international fora. Our team stressed the urgent need for US-Canada collaboration in areas such as trade and defence, particularly in light of the evolving global geopolitical challenges.
Our team was then joined by three Canadian parliamentarians – Hong Kong Watch Patrons Senator Leo Housakos and Shuvaloy Majumdar MP, as well as Richard Bragdon MP – for meetings with leading think tanks, including the Heritage Foundation and the Jamestown Foundation, as well as the Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC). We stressed the importance of countering transnational repression from China and advancing human rights in Hong Kong.
During this visit, Hong Kong Watch held productive meetings with the offices of Representative Young Kim (R-CA), Chair of the East Asia and Pacific Subcommittee, Representative Thomas Suozzi (D-NY), member of the CECC, Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI), member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Representative Jake Auchincloss (D-MA) and Representative Ben Cline (R-VA). We also engaged with the State Department and civil society organisations.
Hong Kong Watch expresses our heartfelt gratitude to all Members of Congress and US government officials for their continued support. We deeply value the opportunity to address these important issues, and remain steadfast in our commitment to defending human rights in Hong Kong and upholding our shared democratic values.
