Canadian MPs and Hong Kong Watch conclude successful visit to Washington, DC
Hong Kong Watch is very grateful to the two Canadian Members of Parliament who visited Washington, DC with us last week to seek to deepen Canada-US relations and collaboration. We also sincerely thank the six Members of Congress – four of whom chair congressional committees – who generously made time to meet with us despite their extremely busy schedules.
During this successful visit, Hong Kong Watch’s Policy and Strategy Advisor Ray Wong and Canada Chair Aileen Calverley, alongside Brad Redekopp MP, Associate Shadow Minister for Immigration and Hong Kong Watch Patron, and Tako Van Popta MP, Shadow Minister for Pacific Economic Development, engaged with the US Congress. Our delegation held meetings with six Members of Congress, including Representatives James McGovern (D-MA), John Moolenaar (R-MI), Young Kim (R-CA), Carlos Giménez (R-FL), James Moylan (R-GU), and Nathaniel Moran (R-TX). We also met with the congressional offices of Senator Jim Risch (R-ID), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Representatives Seth Moulton (D-MA), and James Walkinshaw (D-VA).
Additionally, Hong Kong Watch held meetings with three think tanks, including Advancing American Freedom, America First Policy Institute, and The Jamestown Foundation. We also engaged with officials in the US Department of State and Executive Director of the Formosan Association for Public Affairs (FAPA) Anny Hsiao.
Our discussions covered multiple key issues, including Canada-US coordination on China policy, China’s foreign interference, and Hong Kong’s special status. Notably, Hong Kong Watch presented a letter to Chairman of the Select Committee on China John Moolenaar and Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on East Asia and the Pacific Young Kim, respectively, urging President Donald Trump to raise the release of Jimmy Lai and other political prisoners in Hong Kong during his upcoming visit to China. This week, Chairman Moolenaar followed up with letters to President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, calling for the release of prisoners of conscience, including Jimmy Lai, and accountability for the human rights abuses of Hong Kong officials.
This visit reaffirmed the importance of sustained Canada-US engagement and of strengthened cooperation on shared priorities, including support for Hong Kong and advancement of democratic values.
