Hong Kong Watch joins human rights groups in urging US government to update Hong Kong Business Advisory

On 13 April, Hong Kong Watch joined 27 other human rights organisations in signing a joint letter to the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, to urge the US government to update its Hong Kong Business Advisory and reflect the rapid decline in operational environments for American companies in Hong Kong.

The letter cites new provisions under the National Security Law which further and severely undermine Hong Kong’s legal environment, transparency, rule of law, and data security, as well as Hong Kong’s role in aiding sanctions evasion within the global financial network. Signatories urged the US government to recognise the immediate risks these structural shifts pose on the business environment in Hong Kong, and to update the Hong Kong Business Advisory accordingly.
