Hong Kong Watch Youth Initiative Program Canada 2026

Goals

The Youth Initiative Program in Canada aims to train and empower young Hong Kong Canadians to actively participate in civic life and democratic processes. Through civic education, leadership development, and practical engagement opportunities, the program supports participants in building the knowledge, confidence, and networks needed to integrate successfully into Canadian society and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

The program also seeks to strengthen Hong Konger identity and enhance the social, civic, and political representation of young Hong Kong Canadians. By encouraging participation in public service, community leadership, and policy engagement, the initiative helps ensure that the perspectives and experiences of the Hong Kong diaspora are reflected in municipal, provincial, and federal decision-making.

Program description

Launched in Canada in 2022, the Youth Initiative Program empowers young Hong Kongers through civic education and hands-on political engagement. Participants gain practical knowledge of Canada’s democratic institutions, public policy processes, and community leadership pathways.

Graduates of the program have secured internships in the Parliament of Canada, working in the offices of Senators and Members of Parliament. Several alumni have since progressed to full-time roles as parliamentary staff or have taken positions in municipal and provincial governments. Through these pathways, the program has supported the meaningful participation of young Hong Kong Canadians in Canada’s civic and political life while strengthening community leadership capacity.

In 2026, the Youth Initiative Program in Canada will continue to expand through a series of training sessions on civic education and public engagement hosted by the HongKonger Community Centre Toronto in collaboration with Hong Kong Watch. These sessions are designed to introduce participants to Canada’s political system and to provide practical skills in civic participation.

The sessions may include:

  • Seminar: Understanding the Structure of Government in Canada (Federal, Provincial, Municipal)

  • Seminar: Public Policy and Understanding Party Politics (Liberal Party)

  • Seminar: Public Policy and Understanding Party Politics (Conservative Party)

  • Workshop: Writing to Elected Officials and Professional Etiquette

Participants will also be encouraged to engage in community service and volunteering activities through the HongKonger Community Centre Toronto, enabling them to gain practical experience alongside classroom learning.

Field trips: Participants may volunteer at community and public events hosted by Members of Parliament and other elected officials.

Placements: The program identifies and shares relevant internship, employment, and volunteering opportunities with participants. Candidates may apply for these roles independently, with follow-up support provided in résumé preparation and interview skills. For participants who secure positions with Members of Parliament, Hong Kong Watch will offer intensive pre-placement training.

Young Hong Kong Canadians who are interested in public affairs, civic engagement, and community service are warmly invited to participate in this program.

Join us in nurturing future public leaders, fostering civic participation, and strengthening the voice and resilience of the Hong Kong community across Canada.
