Hong Kong Watch Youth Initiative Program US 2026

Goals

The Youth Initiative Program aims to train and empower young Hong Kong Americans to actively participate in civic life and political processes. Through civic education, leadership development, and practical engagement opportunities, the program supports participants in building the knowledge, confidence, and networks needed to integrate successfully into American society and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

The program also seeks to strengthen Hong Konger identity and enhance the social, civic, and political representation of young Hong Kong Americans. By encouraging participation in public service, community leadership, and policy engagement, the initiative helps ensure that the perspectives and experiences of the Hong Kong diaspora are reflected in local, state, and national decision-making.

Program description

Launched successfully in Canada three years ago, the Youth Initiative Program empowers young Hong Kongers through civic education and hands-on political engagement. Participants gain practical knowledge of democratic institutions, public policy, and community leadership. Graduates of the program have secured internships in the Canadian Parliament, working in the offices of Senators and Members of Parliament, with several alumni progressing to full-time roles as parliamentary staff or provincial government officials. Through these pathways, the program has supported the meaningful participation of young Hong Kongers in Canada’s civic and political life while strengthening community leadership capacity.

In 2026, Hong Kong Watch will extend the Youth Initiative Program to the United States in collaboration with the HongKonger Community Center Foundation. The Bay Area HongKonger Community Center will host a series of four public sessions designed to introduce participants to the fundamentals of the US political system and civic engagement.

These sessions will include:

  • Seminar: Understanding the Three Branches of Government in the United States

  • Workshop: Party Insights – Civic engagement perspectives from Democratic speakers

  • Workshop: Party Insights – Civic engagement perspectives from Republican speakers

  • Seminar: Writing Congressional Correspondence and Professional Etiquette

Community engagement will also be encouraged through volunteering opportunities at the Bay Area HongKonger Community Center, allowing participants to gain practical experience alongside classroom learning.

Washington, DC visit

In addition, participants will have the opportunity to join a Washington, DC Capitol Hill tour and a three-day training conference in September 2026, providing direct exposure to federal institutions, congressional offices, and policymakers.

Young Hong Kong Americans who are interested in public affairs, civic engagement, and community service – including both recent arrivals and the new generation born in the United States – are warmly invited to participate in this program.

Join us in nurturing future public leaders, fostering civic participation, and strengthening the voice and resilience of the Hong Kong community across the United States.
