Joshua Wong sentenced to 10 years behind bars in second Hong Kong National Security Law case

Today, Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for ‘conspiring to collude with foreign forces’ under the Hong Kong National Security Law (NSL), after pleading guilty to the charge in September. This marks his second conviction under the NSL.

Wong was already serving a prison sentence of four years and eight months for ‘conspiracy to commit subversion’ in the ‘Hong Kong 47’ case when he was arrested in June 2025. He was originally due for release in January 2027.

Along with previous charges and sentences related to activities in the 2019 protests, Wong has been remanded in custody for over 2,100 days.

This week ahead of Wong’s sentencing, Hong Kong Watch published the short filmPrisoner vs. Superpower, the sequel to the award-winning 2017 documentary Joshua: Teenager vs. Superpower, on behalf of the R.T. Weatherman Foundation. This sequel documents Wong’s journey from student activism to pro-democracy campaigning, then shows what happened after the 2016 Legislative Council election in Hong Kong.

Megan Khoo, Policy and Advocacy Director of Hong Kong Watch, said:

“The flagrant political prosecution of Joshua Wong is a clear example of the weaponisation of the Hong Kong National Security Law to criminalise any hint of dissent and indefinitely prolong the imprisonment of pro-democracy activists.

Joshua has spent more than 2,100 days behind bars for the ‘crime’ of advocating for freedom and democracy, and will continue to do so for another 10 years. We urge international governments to press the Hong Kong authorities to secure his immediate and unconditional release.”

黃之鋒「串謀勾結外國勢力」罪成被判囚10年  香港監察促各國政府要求立即無條件放人

香港社運人士黃之鋒今年9月承認「串謀勾結外國勢力」罪，今天他被判處10年監禁。這是他第二宗《國家安全法》罪成案件。

黃之鋒在2025年6月被捕時正就47人案「串謀顛覆國家政權」罪服刑四年八個月，原本預計2027年1月出獄。

連同之前涉及2019年示威活動的控罪和刑期，黃之鋒至今已被羈押超過2,100日。

本週在黃之鋒的案件判刑前，香港監察代R.T. Weatherman Foundation發布短片《政治囚犯 vs. 超級強權》。短片是2017年得獎紀錄片《黃之鋒：熱血青年 vs. 超級強權》的續集，首先記載黃之鋒從學運到民運的旅程，然後展示2016年香港立法會選舉後發生的事情。

香港監察政策及倡議總監Megan Khoo表示：

「公然政治檢控黃之鋒是香港當局武器化《國安法》的明顯例子，用以將任何異見均定為犯罪，並無限期延長民主活動人士的監禁刑期。

黃之鋒因倡議自由與民主的『罪行』而在監獄度過逾2,100日，現將額外服刑10年。我們促請各國政府向港府施壓，要求立即無條件釋放黃之鋒。」
