Recap of Hong Kong Watch advocacy activities: January to February 2026
Thanks to the generous support of our donors, Hong Kong Watch is able to sustain our international advocacy work for the Hong Kong community. This recap outlines our key activities in January and February 2026.
United Kingdom
Launched a survey report on the impact of new settlement requirements on BNOs in Parliament, and organised a joint letter from 36 parliamentarians to the Home Office to highlight our survey findings
Secured a policy breakthrough with expansion of the BNO scheme to include adult children of BNOs born before the 1997 handover
Met with the Home Office Minister Lord Hanson of Flint, alongside Lord Tyrie, to discuss BNO policy issues, including the proposed settlement requirements
Marked the fifth anniversary of the BNO scheme with a statement, an op-ed from Lord Patten of Barnes and a social media campaign participated by parliamentarians, calling on the UK government to honour its promises to BNO Hong Kongers
Engaged members of the House of Lords ahead of the debate on transnational repression
Launched a survey on UK-China policy and other issues affecting the Hong Kong community
Canada
Participated in a private roundtable discussion with the Minister of Immigration Lena Metlege Diab on Hong Kong Pathway issues
Met with new Patron Brad Redekopp MP to discuss solutions to Hong Kong Pathway issues
Worked with Hong Kong diaspora groups to issue a statement raising concerns about the agreement on law enforcement cooperation signed between the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Chinese Ministry of Public Security
Assisted in inviting politicians to the HongKonger Community Centre Toronto’s Lunar New Year dinner and supported the event
Attended two Lunar New Year celebrations hosted by the Conservative Party and the Liberal Party respectively, and engaged with MPs during the events
United States
Met with the China Director of the National Security Council at the White House
Called on US Hong Kongers to urge legislators to support HKETO Certification Act
European Union
The European Parliament passed a resolution on the conviction of Jimmy Lai with input from Hong Kong Watch
